The end result of such a decision was mirrored by Nazi Germany where such people along with the disabled were murdered wholesale. Clearly, a person afflicted by mental illness cannot make a reliable decision such as this simply because the very disease itself, negates true understanding of their condition. That is why the condition is termed as an ‘illness’. Then to base a legal agreement on another person‘s educational qualification and insight, persuasions and morality is tantamount to murder, and for every diagnosis in mental health and it’s impact on quality of life, there is an alternative reasoning. There is a touchstone that the Canadian government cannot grasp: if a mentally ill person cannot bear their existence, then suicide is often a natural course of events. If they chose life, then clearly they do not want to die. The illness, and the questions arising from it as to quality of life, no matter how sad or unfortunate often resolves itself within the choices available. There is no need for the State to interfere. Even those of seemingly sound mind, choose to kill themselves because they cannot bear what we see as a normal existence. I can understand that too. It is impossible to evaluate another‘s perception of values in life because that very existence is unique to them - a proven fact when set against life in Nazi Germany concentration camps. The record of care for the disabled, both mental and physical in Britain from Victorian times right up to the 1970s was horrific. It’s not a lot better now.
