This video seems to say the causes of some dying and some not has to do with the delivery mechanism of the poisons:

-The delivery mechanism is simply referred to as "nanoparticles"
-There is a porous outer layer, and the pores are plugged with iron rods that react with the pulsating electromagnetic field
