A dog's sense of smell is the stuff that legends are made of, truly miraculous. This is proven out by police dogs that are used to sniff out carefully concealed contraband. Many find dogs too bothersome, but the key to succeeding as a dog owner lies in their olfactory prowess.

Off leash training- it's stressful when your dog runs off. How do you get it to come back? Keep a small box of treats with you and let them smell it. If they get too far and you want them to come back, don't scold or yell. This only escalates the emotions. Shake the box instead. Dogs don't understand if you use different words, so decide on one word and use it consistently, like "here" or "come" while you shake the box.

The alluring smell of a doggy treat is like a switch in their head that flips on and makes them forget about what they were doing and head back to you. In the early stages of off leash training, use a special treat. Things that we found disgusting or repulsive are divinely exquisite for doggies. Things like entrails specially marketed for that purpose. The smellier the better.

But what about fleas and ticks?
Like everything else, disinformation abounds, but the best food for a dog is raw meat, uncooked. It's easily obtainable by having it delivered frozen. Our dog's fur is so thick now from raw meat, that ticks and fleas don't stand a chance...! The natural oil dogs produce makes its coat shiny and soft. We never have to wash our dog, either. It doesn't stink or get dirty because the nutrition of raw meat makes it happen from within.

Exercising a dog is easier when you understand that a dog exerts more energy sniffing than it does running and playing. Just 10 minutes of sniffing tires a dog out more than 2 hours of running. It's frustrating to see people dragging their dogs along. When I walk our dog, I let it set the pace and allow it time to sniff. Dogs have an amazing ability to catalog all that input.

I'm just scratching the surface here, but these are just a few of my favorite tips. Finding the right guru is essential for success, but you can do it...! Owning a dog takes time, effort, and money, so count the cost. For us though the benefits outweigh.

In closing I just want to say that as witnesses our focus is more on the dire predicament mankind finds itself in. Our four footed friends take a back seat to all that and yet it is a sad commentary on the human race, the level of mistreatment, neglect, pain and suffering these beautiful misunderstood gifts from our creator have to endure.

Was “I’m just scratching the surface‘ an intentional pun?

If our dog has trouble sleeping or is feeling anxious we give her a lick mat. Works great, helps dogs process their anxiety or other issues

I forgot to mention that it's important to feed your dog with an anti-gulp dish... dogs tend to "wolf" down their food. The remedy is a special dog food dish with obstacles built in that slows it down, available at pet stores
My dog would never gulp his food down. He sits at the table with the rest of us, but as his nose tends to get in the way when eating, we taught him to use a fork. I am on the left. The ugly one is my sister.

Dog asks wheres my fork and knife? ...Under your fork n nose.

Yep I'm a dog man. I like horses. Just two of many animals I like. Ah the silhouette of a man or woman, on horse back with a dog or 3 trailing, moving along the ridge, so romantic. A dog's dare I say it powers of perception is way out there. Certainly their sensory perception is. I suspect that would be true of all the animals.
My dog Luke and I drifted around the country for 5 or 6 years, When I looked for work. I taught him a few things. He picked up a few, on his own, I picked up 1 or 3 from him. Almost like he knew what I was saying, He certainly knew what names went with what objects. If I wanted him to attack, the command was "Shake"

I picked that up from him. You see he would shake shit out of things when he was I suspect irritated or excited. So when I caught him doing it, I would say "Shake the ...." It whittled down to "Shake" Dogs have a skill of getting thru fences at speed. I tapped in on that too. I would put him thru the fence, while simultaneously saying get through. It got to a point that I could tell him do do it whenever I wanted him to do so.
Since Luke was predominantly a hunter, rather than a header; I could clear a paddock with him using the "Get thru" command. If I lit him up he would hunt (chase) the herd/flock away rather gather them to me. I would open the gate so that the herd/flock would come into “this” paddock.

I would walk towards the left or right side of "that" paddock whichever fence was closest and tell Luke to get thru. He would stoke it up the fence line. Once he got to the back I say get thru. It got to the point where he would anticipate the call and just get back thru at the right time. Maybe he figured out that he was at the back fence? Either that or was wanting to get at the animals already.

He would start hunting ( chasing ) the animals to me I didn’t need to say shake BTW the whistle equivalent for shake was 3 shorts in quick succession, but I only used it to light him up as in send him away/back. Once he was in his element I would need to control him so that he wouldn’t push the animals too hard. 1 short for stop, shortlong for left, long for right, long-long for walk up. etc.

Dogs and horses are just two more of Jehovah marvelous creations.

I love dogs too! So loyal, loving & faithful. When I get sick my dog won't leave my side. When I'm upset she cuddles very close to me, she's so intuitive...best dog ever! Rescued from spca🥰

Dogs are actually surprisingly intelligent.
A new study has found that dogs are smarter than chimpanzees when it comes to the kind of social capabilities that make humans special.
And although the study found that chimps beat dogs in areas like physical environment and spatial reasoning, dogs got higher marks on cooperative communication skills, according to the study published in the journal Animal Behaviour.
Based on what high IQ humans are doing I'd say dogs win.

Another interesting fact about dogs is that they like to be massaged in a particular way. I took a seminar in that. Some people make a career out of it so it would be impossible to do the subject justice in a short comment , but generally speaking, sketching the big picture they like a very light touch and very slowly. Dogs are way way more sensitive than people.

Dog Language

Every dog, everywhere, understand each other. They don't discriminate on the basis of race, breed or color. Be they christian, Jew, or other. They are born instinctively endowed by their creator with god given traits, life, liberty and the pursuit of happyness...and dog language. It's subtle, but once you learn how to read their signs, its unmistakable.

When I was doing my dog psychology , I used Turid Rugaas a lot . She is brilliant . Also , for frightened dogs , Suzanne Clothier , and a all rounder is Brenda Allof . Some of the comments here are good , but funny . The phrase , "Wolfing it down " comes from dogs and wolves . Neither make enzymes in their mouth , when they chew food , like humans do . In the wild ,they also do not have bags to carry their food home , so they gulp it down in chunks just enough to swallow . When back with the pack , the young pups will lick around the mouth , and cause the adults to regurgitate the food . The pancreas of a dog is very similar to ours , and studies for the use of insulin was done using dogs for this reason . I am a very boring person , but mention dogs , and or history , and the bible , and I am suddenly interested . The dogs have the Jacobson`s organ , from which they get their wonderful sense of smell from . 60% of information comes through their nose . https://www.ellevetsciences.com/pet-care/superpowered-snouts-all-about-dogs-sense-of-smell/
