Friday, June 26th - The Houses of Ivory Will Perish

[Watchman]

You will . . . see the distinction between a righteous person and a wicked person.—Mal. 3:18.

The Bible names more than 40 men who ruled as kings of Israel. The good kings did some bad things. Consider good King David. Jehovah said: “My servant David . . . walked after me with all his heart, doing only what was right in my eyes.” (1 Ki. 14:8) Yet, that man committed sexual immorality with a married woman and conspired to have her husband killed in battle. (2 Sam. 11:4, 14, 15) On the other hand, many of the unfaithful kings did some good things. Consider Rehoboam. In Jehovah’s eyes, he “did what was bad.” (2 Chron. 12:14) Yet, Rehoboam obeyed God’s order to have ten tribes break away from his kingdom. He also benefited his nation by fortifying its cities. (1 Ki. 12:21-24; 2 Chron. 11:5-12) How did Jehovah determine whether a king was faithful in His eyes? Evidently, He took into consideration his heart condition, his repentance, and his adherence to true worship. w24.07 20 ¶1-3

The Governing Body is like some of those prominent Corinthians whom Paul sarcastically chided, asking them if they have already begun to rule as kings without the apostles. It is quite fitting. The Governing Body lives in a gated complex in luxurious surroundings. Remember, they had granite slabs specially quarried in China and shipped to New York for their new headquarters, what I call Warwick Castle. They even gave Bethel the postal address of One Kings Drive. Seriously?

They have servants and "helpers" who tend to their every need. While millions of Christians struggle to obtain the necessities of life, the GB and their lawyers and bean counters, and real estate specialists, have free everything, including health care and dental. They travel in chauffeur-driven luxury cars and fly first class. They truly are treated as royalty. They rule by decree and dictate what millions of JWs must believe. They are cloistered in their castle and have no communication with those whom they govern. And their word, whether written or spoken, is regarded as coming from the mouth of God. To question the Governing Body is regarded as questioning Jehovah himself. Except there is a big difference. God allows himself to be questioned. Jesus most certainly did. The humble Son of God always responded to questions, even from his hard-set enemies who were trying to entrap him.

As regards the kings of the 10 tribe kingdom of Israel, we read in Amos: "I will also call for an accounting against the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the earth. I will strike down the winter house along with the summer house.’ ‘The houses of ivory (granite) will perish, and the great houses will come to their end,’ declares Jehovah.” (3:14-15)

If you recall, when Rehoboam became king of Israel, to prevent any reunification with the two tribes of Judah and Benjamin, he set up idols so worshippers would not have to travel back to Jerusalem, where the temple was. One idol center was the city of Bethel. So, Bethel was competing with Jerusalem, Jerusalem being the center of "pure worship" at the time. Hence, Jerusalem and Zion are symbols of God's Kingdom. Bethel today will become a competitor of Zion when Christ comes as King. And you may be sure that Jesus did not become king in 1914. So, the "great houses" of ancient Israel foreshadow the Bethel houses, such as Warwick Castle, Patterson, and numerous branches of Bethel.

I am spending this summer notifying the elders of the impending end of the Governing Body's kingship.
