I never thought I'd read anything in Wikipedia of interest regarding the Bible but...

Look at the section: "The plot to kill Lazarus of Bethany".

It really puts Jesus' illustration of the rich man and Lazarus in a new light for me. Luke 16:19-31

What a daring gambit by Christ. He not only exposed the Saducees with this but, if it's true, he tweaked the nose of the ruling priests (Saducees) directly with his masterful illustration. He also had fun with the fact that the Saducees didn't believe in a resurrection. But he did it in a way that they wouldn't even know. Matt 11:25

No wonder those sent to arrest him said: "Never has another man spoke like this". John 7:46

In John 18 when they came to arrest Him on Mt Olives when asking 'We are looking for Jesus the Nazarene' He replied 'I am He'......They fell backwards!

I wondered about that. It was tough to find a definitive answer on why they fell backwards. I found one source that said that when he acknowledged he was the one, he was surrounded by his apostles so the soldiers "fell backwards and to their knees" in a defensive posture behind their shields. They didn't know if they were going to have a fight on their hands.

Another answer given was that they were astounded that a "guilty man" (in their eyes) would be so bold in identifying himself, and it shocked them back. Maybe they were mistaken...they must have asked themselves. When the innocent are picked on, the "authorities" sometimes realize they are mistaken through the actions of the accused and it makes them less "zealous" in their approach. This happens in police work today, I'm told. Cops can "smell" the guilty and the innocent. They go by their "gut" as it were. The good ones get it right more often than not.

Then I've heard really strange theories about how the angels, at first ,resisted the soldiers taking their friend, companion and soon to be king. They pushed the soldiers back and to their knees where they should have been. But God's will had to be done and they backed off.

That, to me, is the strangest of the explanations. Has anyone heard of any other theories?

Who knows? In the new system, we'll be enlightened, I'm sure.
