Maintain Joy and Perspective "THE THREE COLUMN TECHNIQUE"

Howdy Folks. I thought I'd make a quick post about a simple technique I developed some time ago which I believe helped to save my spiritual backside.

The Three Column Technique is an exercise in "compartmentalization" which essentially is just a big word for organizing the mind in such a way that the "Wheat doesn't get blended with the Chaff. "

When under pressure or during bouts of depression it's very easy for things in the mind to become mixed up and conflated. Some Brothers and Sisters that leave the Truth end up as Atheists. Whilst some of these people are acting out of a bad heart I also believe that many of them simply can't separate Truth from the Lie and during a period of extreme mental duress they throw out the "baby with the bath water". What ostensibly may appear as Godless rebellion can often times be nothing more then a desperate dash for Psychological Survival.

To complete the Three Column Technique all you need is a piece of paper divided into 3 Columns and about 30 minutes of time. If you can manage it, it definitely helps if you can actually complete the exercise physically. 99% of people will simply try and do it mentally but I believe the exercise's real strength is in putting pen to paper.

Column one will be entitled "Doctrine".

In this column make a list of the precious Core Doctrines you have learned during your time in the Truth. Some suggestions might be "The Divine Name"...."The Resurrection Hope" "No eternal torment" "1000 year Reign of Christ" "The Ransom" etc

Column Two will be entitled "Christian Morals and Living".

In this column make a list of the Biblical Morals and Principles that you have learned that have served as a protection and a light to your roadway. Some suggestions might be a list of the "Fruitages of the Spirit" "No Cheating, Lying, Stealing" "No Adultery/Fornication" "No homosexuality" etc

Column Three will be entitled "Watchtower/ Organization".

In this column make a list of some of the Organizational things you have experienced that have hurt, wounded or confused you. Some suggestions might be "Failed Dates", "GB Covid Updates", "Judicial Corruption", "Lack of genuine love" etc As an optional addition I actually put a little slogan underneath the title of Column Three saying "Theocracy unsupported by scripture is nothing but Bureaucracy in Disguise".

So a finished product would look something like this. (Btw I hav'nt made the lists exhaustive as you may have different things that you would personally put in the columns....the things listed must be true to your own experience) You can also pick your favourite Bible verses as an aside to each point.

DOCTRINE CHRISTIAN LIVING AND MORALS WATCHTOWER/ORGANIZATION

Ransom Sacrifice of JesusLove Neighbour as SelfFailed Dates/ Predictions
Resurrection HopeNo Adultery/ Fornication/HomosexualityWonky Judicial Decisions
No HellfireNo DrugsChild Abuse
Paradise EarthPray for EnemiesSale of Kingdom Halls
EtcEtcEtc

Once you've completed your list place it somewhere where you can see it regularly such as on the Fridge or inside your bible jacket. The goal of having the list written out is to create what I call "Snap Back". After a while of viewing the list your mind will automatically separate the Wheat from the Chaff and when feeling overwhelmed or perplexed you will be able to Snap Back into a state of Perspective and Spiritual harmony.

As mentioned above, some brothers when faced with issues listed in Column Three get them intermingled with the first two columns and in an attempt to cure their profound levels of dissonance , everything gets swept out together. In other words their mind in a spiritual sense looks like a bowl full of Gumballs. All Three Columns jumbled up together.

gumballs.jpg

The Governing Body could tie their Undies on their head and do a Nudie Run around Patterson but does that alter the beautiful Truths of Column One? If I felt I could no longer associate with the Org, does that in any way alter my commitment to live by the precious qualities, morals and principles of Column Two?

Whether like Meditator, Driven, Jackie etc you are still active to an extent in the ORG; or like Kimmy, Dog etc you are estranged from it; this simple exercise can help us to continue to spiritually grow, mature and focus on our commitment to the first two Columns.

If something happens in the ORG that really messes with my mind , these days I actually say out loud "Well, as bad as it is...that's a Third Column Issue. I won't let it affect my love for the first Two Columns."

Anyway, I hope the relative simplicity of the exercise doesn't put any of you off. For me the simplicity of the Technique is what makes it work so well. With the latest developments during Covid I frequently had to use it to "SNAP BACK" and remind myself how blessed I am to have been taught all the wonderful things in the first Two Columns.

Whether we are still in the ORG or for some reason find ourselves outside of it, it is still possible to continue making spiritual progress by not letting "Third Column Issues" get us down. Remember also that many brothers in the Org are still wholeheartedly committed to the Truths of the first two columns and the Organization despite it's faults and blemishes is still committed to them as well.

Best wishes Brothers. Despite the Craziness surrounding us at moment let's make it our resolve to not allow Third Column Issues get us down!

You're welcome TL. Is that going to be the trend..ie...will they work through all the Updates in a scheduled manner? If so, I'm going to have to Tattoo the list to my forehead and get in a Defibrillator to survive the Zoom. Actually sometimes I feel better when I just phone in....softens the blows. 😒🤷‍♂️

Excellent post and really great information and helpful to maintain perspective when it seems to some as if the bottom has fallen out. If our focus is on Jehovah and his goodness and wonderful qualities, and on Jesus Christ and on doing what they've told us to do, we can't go wrong. These imperfect men on the governing body are just men, Jehovah knows what's going on. These men are not The Truth, Jesus is the Way and the Truth and the Life.

When I listen to some of the older videos (not available on jw org website) that were made by the org I literally cry because of what it was and what it's become. Now we have loads of governing body videos and Caleb and Sophia. It's heartbreaking for me. It reminds me of when Jesus wept over Jerusalem.
"As Jesus approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it." Luke 19:41

Beautiful Older archive video not on jw org (not recommended if you are bothered by anything Watchtower)
The Bible Mankind's Oldest Modern Book 1994-Archived JW but not on JW org YouTube

Thanks Babs and I love your heartfelt expressions about what you are seeing in the ORG. I'll watch the Video later when I've got a better connection.

If "out of the heart's abundance the mouth speaks" then I believe the ORG is actually more precious to many of the Brothers than Christ. I hear regular praise for JW.ORG/WT but expressions about the ransom and everything Jehovah has made possible for us through his son are extremely rare. In fact if you express such a devotion for Christ often times their will be an awkward pause as the brothers are taken back by it....almost like they think you are becoming an Evangelical.

I've also noticed that the Brothers have become very scripted in their speech. This appears to reflect the general trend in Society whereby there is almost an Orwellian Devotion to being PC in conversation. If someone in the World questions Covid they are a "Covid Denier". If they question Climate Change they are a "Climate Denier". These little slogans are everywhere and they are the enemy of open, honest and sincere communication/investigation.

30 years ago as a young Pioneer I use to love listening to the Older Brothers and sisters as they postulated and theorized about certain biblical topics. They weren't questioning the Society but were simply enthusing over certain possibilities or outcomes in Jehovah's purpose.

These days I've noticed that the trend in the Truth is to stay scripted....almost like a new form of Organizational PC. Terms like "Wait on Jehovah"....."Don't run ahead"....... "Do you know more than the GB?" are now used to close down what is nothing more than genuine heartfelt spiritual curiosity.

Unity is a wonderful thing but it must be based on love and centred in Christ. If not, what ostensibly appears as Christian Unity becomes nothing but "Forced Conformity". Our claimed Unity becomes nothing but Whitewash.....a Spiritual form of North Korea.

Isa 28:10 For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, there a little.

Isa 28:13 Therefore shall the word of Jehovah be unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

Isa 28:20 For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it; and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.

Isa 28:16 therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner-stone of sure foundation: he that believeth shall not be in haste.

And this final one from Jeremiah....sounds a lot like you Babs. I havn't been able to Post much due to my Internet Sabbaticals but when I've been able to log on I've been very encouraged by all the Work you're doing on the Forum......keep it up Sister. Much appreciated. 👍

Jer 9:1 Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

But seriously, thank you for sharing this. I really appreciate the suggestion. You are right about putting it in writing. That has been proven to have a greater impact than just mentally sorting. I think this is exactly what I need right now to keep my gumballs all sorted. I have to admit I am struggling to respect the organization and I find myself regularly questioning and suspicious of many things that I used to accept.

Also I agree about the brothers and sisters being scripted in their speech. It seems like everyone I talk to just says the same things, and that mostly consists of praising the GB for the updates and keeping us safe. Unity is so important that we should all be programmed clones, repeating the approved phrases, speaking only on the approved topics? Has anyone seen the movie "The Giver"? 😳

And I have been asked this exact question ^ when I had a conversation with someone about my stand on the jab. I just wonder how many people feel like us, but zipping their lips and slowly backing away?

I feel exactly the same way MJ. Even prior to Covid my trust in the Org had been blown apart by corrupt Brothers and what appeared to me to be a form of Organizational Idolatry that was developing. It's like the Brothers were becoming focused on the Brand (Jw.org) more then the head of the congregation, Jesus.

I have no problem with having an appreciation for the hard work many Brothers are doing around the World. But we are treading on thin ice if those feelings of appreciation morph into Adulation. Self Praise fosters Pride and nurtures arrogance.

Since 2006 I have noticed this trend in some of the Brothers that they were somehow above any criticism and that they could laugh and mock other religions at will.

It doesn't even have to be criticism. You might make a suggestion that you feel could help with the functioning of the ORG and all you get is this look of Incredulity and a stare like "How stinking dare you make a suggestion to us. We instruct you....you don't dare instruct us!!"

Some areas are worse than others but it definitely seems to be ubiquitous across the Org.

And I have been asked this exact question ^ when I had a conversation with someone about my stand on the jab. I just wonder how many people feel like us, but zipping their lips and slowly backing away?

I'm very estranged from the Brothers at the moment. I have a couple that I speak to on the phone and they are all the way in with the Covid Agenda. One of them I actually convinced to wait off on the Jab but as soon as Update Number 9 came out it was like Jehovah's name had been attached to the name of Pfizer and in he went for the shot.

Mixed Gumballs can be a real buggar. I get worn out having to do the sorting but if I don't make an effort my spirituality suffers for it.

Jehovah is true God. Christ is true Lord. No matter what other men do or say I am committed to my Creators and even if I get "cast out of the Synagogue" I will honour them for life.

Rev 4:11 "Our Lord and God! You are worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. For you created all things, and by your will they were given existence and life."

Thankyou and you're welcome. As Jehovah's people we really have been given some spiritual diamonds to treasure. Unfortunately Satan has thrown in a few fake Jewels to try and confuse us but if we stay in the Word and Jehovah's spirit he will help us to weed out the false from the true.

The Resurrection hope alone is reason for great joy. When you look at the rubbish that is served up in Christendom's churches we really have been blessed to know that so many of our human family are returning as a result of our loving Father's great love, mercy and grace.

I still have to make use of the 3 Column technique on a regular basis as there is always a Covid curve ball coming from the Brothers when you least expect it.

I just got off the Zoom Sunday morning meeting and the Public speaker applied 2 Tim 3 1-5 to people in the World who protested the Covid Lockdowns. Whilst I wouldn't join a rally I understand that many people who attended were not being puffed up with pride but were doing so as a matter of principle. They were having their lives torn apart and felt like they had to push back.

Things like that are Third Column issues. Not pleasant but certainly no reason to lose our love for Jehovah's all round purpose. (y)

Brilliant. What a great exercise! (-:

I’m in an on-going process to make peace with the org- still grieving my losses and trying to move on.

I really believe that Jehovah snatched me out of the fire- lead me here to be in fellowship with all you fine lovers of truth, and to learn the deep things of God. I am in a state of perpetual gratitude for that.

I still have plenty of emotional damage that needs sorting out and this exercise will be helpful.

Did you come up with this? Bravo, and thank you.

I was thinking last night- speculating on what’s next for Bethel- perhaps something like a video on JW broadcasting starring one of the Eight, instructing JWs to embrace the trans-gender movement using the same rationale as its savior institutions, the CDC, FDA and WHO.

Howdy Kimmy. Thanks. I was in the same position as you. I was Disassociated and furious with the corruption I had experienced in the ORG but also in general I was finding some of the behaviour of the Brothers was becoming almost cult like and Idolatrous in their veneration of the Society/GB.

Despite that though I was still heavily studying my bible and my hatred and contempt for Satan's World was growing day by day.

It's a strange situation to be in where your spirituality is going North whilst your faith in the Org is heading South.

I figured if I made it back to the Org and it helped one single person then it would be worth it. I spent the best part of 3 years attending meetings before I could apply for reinstatement. Hard yards but still doable.

So the Three Column Technique was what I developed in 2017 so I could deal with my feelings of anger and resentment and channel them in the right direction. I loved the central nuts and bolts of the truth and I also knew there were still Brothers left in the Org that are the real deal if I was patient enough to find them.

I'm not saying that a person has to return to the Org if they have been ousted on conscience. I can see myself potentially getting the boot again if I open my big mouth when I get back to the meetings again.

But by focusing on the two columns I know that I will never give up on my belief in Jehovah and his Son no matter what the Org or the World may do to me. We have been blessed with such a beautiful hope and we can't let Pharisaic Legalists strip us of that joy.

Inside the Truth or outside of it Kimmy, you can make a big difference. You are tenacious and up for the fight and are already doing much to help others to stay spiritually Awake. Exciting times ahead Kimbo. (y)🧑‍🎄 (there's that Santa again...how the heck did he get in here?)

i understand, and I admire and respect your position- your ability to compartmentalize what’s true, and perform your obligations to Jehovah thusly. That’s not easy in this climate of- CRAZY

I can’t judge anyone’s decision to stay or leave- i won’t ever do that.

i do allow myself the freedom to evaluate and determine whether the leadership is leading responsibly, whether its course is justified, reasonable, safe, and spiritually beneficial.

I cannot, in good conscience, promote this GovBody or its organ, JW dot org- i repudiate it as a spokesman for Jehovah, and that makes me very sad.

I thought about going back on more than one occasion. In fact, the ethos behind much of the teaching is to humiliate one’s self publicly for failing or being ‘weak’. Yet I realised some time later that the act of contrition was not viewed as such by the elders, and that their gratification was that they dominated the errant one. There was no ‘joy’ at repentance, but gloating in their power. One was always marked. The sort of joy for an errant one seeing the error of their way, is described well in the son returning to his father having spent his inheritance. A banquet was laid on, the fatted cow, slaughtered. Everyone participating in the joy of that ones’s return. It pales into insignificance when set against the crushing attitude of elders. There is nothing left for me in the watchtower. That died long ago. That is the thing about love. It can die if not reciprocated. There is more love on this site than I have ever seen in the watchtower. You don’t even get a ‘like’ in the watchtower, just for turning up!

Absolutely. They even passed a rule not to clap if someone is reinstated as this might be seen as condoning their error.

It took me till I was into my 40's to understand just how many of them are motivated by power. Previously I had always Idealized the Organizational process and hence ended up completely deluding myself. I wish I had of cottoned on to the Power Dynamics at a younger age.....could of saved myself a whole load of trouble.

Very true. When people talk of a misspent youth, being a JW is not usually top of the list. At least it got me out on the ministry, but preaching a lie? I am still wondering what happen to so many years.

One thing that sticks in my mind. I was a young 23 year old Pioneer Zealot in 1993 and I was out visiting a Recreational Vehicle (That's Dutch for Back Call) in the Rurals.

This bloke was a real dinky di genuine straight shooter and he said to me "Hang on let me get this straight. The Awake article says that people alive in 1914 will see Armageddon. But that means you a putting a time limit on it. I guarantee you are going to have to change this. Come back here in 2004 and I bet you they will have changed this. "

This bloke was no Academic. He was the town Milkman. And yet he was able to sum up the situation accurately and with no hint of malice. He was in his 50's and was genuinely concerned for me. He was talking to me in a Fatherly tone as if to say "don't get suckered in by this.....THINK".

As I was driving off from his property in my young JW zealot mind I felt so terribly sorry for the guy. I believed Armageddon will definitely come before 2004 and that the Milkman was completely misguided.

In 2015 I was having a chat with one of the Elders who was trying to reactivate me and I related this same experience to him. I said to the Elder that when it came to being faithful and discreet the Milkman acted with more discretion then we did.

The Elder still held the line that we were right and the Milkman was wrong. His words..."Well the generation that saw 1914 is an overlapping generation. And besides which there are still Centenarians from 1914 that are still alive so the Society was definitely right...not the Milkman".

The level of arrogance in the Elder's response was palpable. Even when it was glaringly obvious that we had made a gigantic stuff up there was not even the slightest hint of contrition or accountability. Jaw out. Chin pointing skyward. Arms folded. Chest puffed up. Total unequivocal arrogance.

Jer 6:14 They treated my people's wound superficially, telling them, 'Peace, peace,' but there is no peace.
Jer 6:15 Were they ashamed because they did what was repugnant to God? They were not ashamed at all—they don't even know how to blush!
