Fear and control - the number one satanic mode of mastery inflicted on human beings. We are all subject to it and so it is not of a surprize that we meet it often along our road. Are you sure you're not my dad? My dad didn't allow us to eat ANY refined sugar. Back then it was a lot easier, but if my mom made any sweets she had to sweeten it with honey. Which wasn't bad for some things, but try putting honey in coffee, for example. But my dad, was not balanced when it came to that. For us kids to get any treats of any kind, other than the stuff she made with honey, she had to sneak it into the house. And when my dad found the sweets he would have a fit. I remember as a kid, my dad finding something under the cabinets, and freaking out, yelling and screaming, and my mom crying afterwards. In addition to not allowing any sweets, we were not allowed any refined flour either, that is to say, white bread on any kind. My Mom, would make pizza, with "whole wheat flour" dough and even though it was god awful us kids loved it! (We didn't know any better.) Oh, as a side note, when I was little, I thought the reason we didn't eat sugar is because we were witnesses, so when I saw a kid eating sugar I thought the were going against Jehovah.
So, we limit the amount of sugar as much as possible. Especially sugary drinks, like soft drinks. It's all about balance, and the truth is, the food in Satan's system is awful all the way around. It's all contaminated.
When compared with the road Jehovah both is, in Himself, and advises us to follow, the facets of the Holy Spirit allow us the freedom to accommodate ‘differences’ in behaviour yet still maintain our reasonableness - or meekness as the Bible terms it. We can appreciate the character in others and look to motive instead, because these behaviours are often driven far more by love than the “control” of others, as it is today. Doubtless your father’s concern for you.
The body is built for moderation in all proper and natural foods and they are certainly tolerated by the body within its capacity for normal appetite. The body even adjusts its faculty of taste over time to accommodate satisfaction and thus we get used to differences and even come to enjoy them.
