Great question. Of course I can only refer to what the bible tells us and what I was taught to reason on as one of JW’s. If we look in Genesis, the reason that Abram (Abraham) and Lot separated was because they had so many goods and livestock they could no longer dwell together. Abram is described as VERY RICH (muy rico) in livestock, silver and gold and so I imagine that was the case for Lot. Lot got first choice in the land where he wanted to make a home. So think of it. If you had plenty of dough and you could choose any land you wanted, you would choose the best. And Lot did. The bible tells us that he chose the whole district of the Jordan and that it was like the garden of Jehovah, so it must have been gorgeous! And, now that you have the most exquisite property you can chose, you now have the money, materials, workers, etc. to build your dream home. Of course your neighbors are pretty disgusting but hey, life‘s not perfect right? And, your daughters have found husbands there too. So, you have developed deep roots in that area. I believe I recall that they even likely had indoor plumbing too.

Now the angels want you to flee for your lives. What can you take with you? Not much, just the basics. So, it makes sense to me that she had a longing for the materially prosperous life, their custom home and just a comfort that comes with familiarity. And, no doubt there was a lack of faith. Pretty much all sin results from a lack of faith. So, this is my guess.
There is something else about that account. Abraham had been promised that land by Jehovah. He conceded part of it to Lot after a fight between their shepherds. Abraham let Lot choose but Lot should have deferred to Abram and let him choose. Abraham was the older man and Lot's uncle. It was a bit of selfishness on Lot's part and it ended up biting him on the behind for the reasons you mentioned. Abraham displayed great humility and that's one of many reasons that Jah blessed him greatly.

I've always taken it as a lesson to humbly let people have their way, as long as it doesn't compromise your faith. Jehovah is the one who does the blessing in the end and he will bless a generous soul. That's the idea anyway but it's tough to live up to it some times.

@Driven thats what it came down to for her. Faith (lack of) She could have thought to herself-
why can’t we just stay inside our house and hunker down there where all our stuff is? Perhaps thinking that she knew better than Jehovah. It’s a scary prospect that one could so easily have their faith undermined by material possessions, but it happens all the time. It’s a very important lesson, isn’t it.

Great point. Many issues likely factored in.

I think you may have something there. I think Driven has clear insight too, certainly her points did not occur to me, but on the other hand, should not two worshippers of Jehovah share their land equally and without being selfish, or as you say, the younger concede to the elder one? Under the spirit of the law, Lot would have been blessed for doing so and thus as you say, the less so for then for letting greed get in the way and taking the best land for himself. It gives a bit of insight into the general faith of Lot and his wife and perhaps, of his wife’s reason for looking back. She had allowed wealth to compromise her faith There is a similar principle in the bible….don’t ask me where and of whom….where a chap and his wife sold land to give money to the preaching work (I think), but kept part of it back, but allowing others to think they had given all. He didn’t have to give any money, but did so for his own need to appear righteous and generous. It seems similar to me in the watchtower asking for donations for the preaching work, but spending it on their own comfort and grandeur. Maybe the reason Lot‘s wife was turned to salt, was illustrative of her values in that come the next rain, it all a valuable commodity like salt simply melted away, as do all of man’s hopes if not placed in Jehovah.

The account said she began to look back at the city before turning into a pillar of salt.

I’ve speculated over the years what could have been going through her mind when she looked back at the city because the account doesn’t say- i wonder if she was looking for close family members or friends.

When Christ appears again in his parousia, and he says to us this is the way, walk this way and we perhaps turn around and look back for friends and family we could lose out on our chance at being rescued. When we get explicit instructions like that it’s imperative we follow them exactly. Thoughts?

Gen 19 Then Jehovah made it rain sulfur and fire on Sodʹom and Go·morʹrah—it came from Jehovah, from the heavens. So he overthrew these cities, yes, the entire district, including all the inhabitants of the cities and the plants of the ground. But Lot’s wife, who was behind him, began to look back, and she became a pillar of salt.
That's a thought provoking question. I guess there was numerous things that Lot's wife was thinking about when she looked back at the city. The huge test we will face is the mark of the beast. I think Robert said this could be connected to a new UN digital dollar. If we reject the mark, then how can we buy/sell and enjoy the numerous things that we have today? Perhaps some will initially decline the UN digital dollar, but then 'look back' and desire what they had, then cave in and accept the mark. When we are banned from buying food & shelter etc, we will need to put explicit trust in God and his angels to help us survive.
