Start a Garden, share your tips and tricks ⬇️

Here in Michigan, our garden has finally come into full bloom. Torrential rains over the past month have turbocharged everything, weeds included. Today, for the first time this year, my Missy and I have had a dinner created entirely from the garden: corn on the cob, pan-seared zucchini, tomatoes and onions, herbs, the whole deal. Taters are coming on strong too. It is amazing what Jehovah does with seeds. Tiny little seeds. Boom! Amazing!
Yum!
Nothing like garden grown corn on the cob and tomatoes.

Okay, I think maybe I've found a solution to the cabbage worms from those white butterflies. My once lovely cabbages are just loaded with their eggs on the underside of the leaves and my cabbage resembles Swiss cheese from them chowing down on the nutritious vegetable. This is the first time that I've grown cabbage and so I'm learning as I go, unfortunately in this case the hard way. But, fortunately, it's the only vegetable so far that I've planted that these insects lay their eggs on and feed on. I've looked into solutions, but the sprays (sold on Amazon), though safe and organic, are rather pricey, and part of the point of a garden is to save money. Below is a video for an inexpensive, natural, organic, homemade solution that can be sprayed on the cabbage, broccoli or similar vegetables to get rid of these invaders. It also works on tomato horn worms.

Garden tip: If you have problems with deer eating the product of your hard work, this is something easier and much less expensivd and less work than installing a 6 ft fence and which may do the trick and keep the deer out of your garden. It worked for this lady gardener.

This is one way we can put all those COVID masks to good use. They will probably help to not breath in the fumes from the spray.

Garden Tip: How to build an inexpensive, easy, quick and non-toxic garden bed. It's best not to use treated wood for your raised bed because the chemicles can leech into the soil and contaminate your vegetables. This guy recommends using linseed oil on the wood to protect it and to make it last longer. I thought while watching the video that he should have coated the wood prior to assembling and in fact he said that he wished he'd done so. These are a nice size making it easy to reach but it can be adjusted to 4 X 8 or whatever you wish and the depth can be adjusted if you prefer a 2 ft bed. There's some good music in the video too, but of course you can speed it up if desired.

We have nocturnal raccoons attacking the sweet corn. They partially shuck it and take a few nibbles, and apparently, if it is not sweet enough to their taste, they chuck it and go to the next stalk. I don't mind sharing, but they shouldn't be wasteful. Maybe I will stop braking for coons crossing the road at night? Nah. I can't do that.

This sounds like a cheap, easy and safe non-toxic fix to keep raccoons away. All you need are some tennis balls and vinegar and you may be able to get used, retired tennis balls for free from a tennis center or high school. (Edited, added link to video 🙂)

This is a SURVIVAL FOOD during hard times, such as war and famine. The Jerusalem artichoke is really misnamed, as it's not from Jerusalem and is not really an artichoke but is somewhat like a potato but related to the sunflower. It grows in poor soil, where other crops cannot grow well, it'll survive the winter in the ground as a continous food source and will return and grow the next year, and, it makes lovely flowers, like sunflowers.

BrooksB and I just planted 2 new limes trees, 1 lemon, 1 blood orange and 1 miracle fruit. We have concrete planter areas next to our lot line and some areas look like they will be a good place for the trees, but a couple of the spots are iffy. We’ll see if they survive. If you haven’t heard of miracle fruit here is a link, https://gardenerspath.com/plants/houseplants/grow-miracle-fruit/

I have been planting food for a few years but with little success due to very rocky soil ,nothing seems to grow except squash.
any suggestions would be more than welcome.
If you have poor soil (like I do), this video has some good ideas on how to naturally and organically create good, rich soil, while at the same time recycling food "waste", which, when turned into good soil, isn't wasted. This is a way to compost without buying a plastic compost bin.

Kevin (and anyone with poor soil or limited space), If you'd like to grow your own potatoes, here's a great, inexpensive idea that works and all you need are a couple of cardboard boxes, some soil, a bit of fertalizer and a few seed potatoes, and of course sunshine and water. It's also a great way to upcycle cardboard boxes.
