"Sweep Through Bible Reading". (STBR)

Having Adult ADD due to Concussion Issues I am continually having to find ways to "trick" my brain into maintaining focus and concentration.

I also tend to have what I call a "Scriptural Bias" when it comes to my Bible reading that if given the choice I tend to want to stay in the Apostle Pauls letters, Jeremiah and the book of Psalms.

I developed "Sweep Through Bible Reading"(STBR) back in 2019 to help solve the above issues. It's a simple technique that can be customized to each Individuals concentration levels and I believe helps address the issues I was experiencing with concentration and "Scriptural Bias".

Instead of reading the Bible in a normal sequential manner with" Sweep Through Bible Reading" (STBR) you read a small portion of each Bible Book and then move on to the next. This ensures that each book of the Bible is given attention on a regular basis.

So my current Sweep Through Programme is to read 2 Chapters of each book and then move to the next.

Example. First Sweep.

Genesis Chapters 1 and 2
Exodus Chapters 1 and 2
Leviticus Chapters 1 and 2
Numbers Chapters 1 and 2
Deuteronomy Chapters 1 and 2

Etc Etc.

By following this pattern on a daily basis you will "Sweep Through" the entire Bible in two months. If you read Two Chapters in the morning and then two at night then this will actually drop to one month.

At the end of the first Sweep you simply go back to Genesis and start again like this.....

Genesis Chapters 3 and 4
Exodus Chapters 3 and 4
Leviticus Chapters 3 and 4
Numbers Chapters 3 and 4
Deuteronomy Chapters 3 and 4

Etc Etc.

By reading the Bible in this manner I find the following advantages.

1. It quickens up the pace. This is great for people that have concentration problems. STBR creates movement, action and enhances anticipation.

2. Each book of the Bible is given attention on a more regular basis as opposed to normal standard sequential Bible Reading which may see some books of the Bible overlooked for lengthy periods of time.

3. It removes "Scriptural Bias" and gives each book in the Bible equal weight.

4. It gives a really good feel for the Bible's Theme and context. By "sweeping through" the Bible on a more frequent basis the reader is able to absorb it's textual unity and the flow of it's unified message.

5. The Bible can seem like a daunting book for someone with concentration issues. STBR reduces it into a more easily managed task.

Naturally as some books in the Bible contain large amounts of Chapters this means on each "Sweep" the pace of Bible Reading will increase and become faster and faster as the smaller books of the Bible drop off the list. Very much like a melting ice cube.

The pace can either be lengthened or shortened according to each one's individual needs. Some may choose to read only a single chapter of each book before they jump to the next. Others might prefer a larger sample....ie.....3 Chapters at a time. For me personally I found one Chapter too short to gain context and Three Chapters too long to create movement. However this is merely a personal preference and not to be taken as a rule.

I use this technique as my mainstay for Bible Reading. I have another Bible for casual reading and I use this to go wherever I like. ...generally Galatians through to Colossians as that is where I feel closest to Christ.

Anyway if you feel like you are stagnating with your Bible Reading or are suffering from Scriptural Bias give it a go and see what you think. Going at 2 Chapters in the morning and 2 Chapters at night you will complete Genesis to Revelation in a month.

Best Wishes.

@4JahandChrist

What Bible translations do you use? Do you have a preference?

Seems like a practical technique to use when individuals, such as myself, have trouble focusing. Thanks for the tip. 👍🏼
I currently use a NIV Study Bible because I love it's charts and maps. I would of used a large print NWT but It was hard to source one. The Society won't allow purchase via Mail so you have to attend a KH to get one.

@4JahandChrist

I had heard recently that the WT was tampering with even other translations ( like the ones on the library/website) I think I understood they bought the rights to those particular Bible translations?

From memory they have printed quite a few of the King James, American Standard Version and the Bible in Living English. I just updated the APP recently and there was a few different translations available on there.
