Interesting day today. Someone stole a truck and ditched it right on our railroad tracks.
Yesterday was rainy, so we were out on a weather patrol. That’s when you take a hi-rail truck, get a track warrant, put it on the rails, and cruise the line looking for things like downed trees or washouts. Pretty routine stuff. We do it all the time for storms, heat patrols, and more. It was shaping up to be an easy Friday, or so we thought.
About halfway through, dispatch called and told us to keep an eye out for a stolen truck. Apparently the driver was running from the police and decided to turn onto the tracks to get away. The problem was it was not a hi-rail vehicle. They were literally just straddling the rails.
At that point, we figured they probably ditched it somewhere south of us. Sure enough, another crew ahead of us on the same line found it first. By the time we got there, the police were already on scene.
Looks like the guy got the truck stuck and bailed. After that, he tried to break into a house down the road, and the homeowners beat him up pretty badly. Last we heard, he was taken to the hospital and then arrested.
I have pictures and video, but I cannot share them publicly. I am guessing this will end up in the news, so I will post that when it comes out.
