Excerpt from Gilbert's (older a little outdated compared to his saturn book) book Veneration

“He removed the high places and broke the pillars and cut down the Asherah. And he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the people of Israel had made offerings to it (it was called Nehushtan).” (2 Kings 18:4) Now, this last verse is very interesting, because it references the bronze serpent called by the people Nehushtan. In the chapter on Inanna, we’ll relate a story about her consort Dumuzi, who may have been the god known by this very name (after he was turned into a reptilian creature). It’s unclear if these serpentine images were associated with the Asherah poles, but if so, one can picture a caduceus. Associating snakes with trees also evokes Genesis 3, when the Nachash tempted Adam and Eve into sinning.
