We've all felt this unease lately. It is remarkable how far society has fallen, and nowhere is it more obvious than in how people treat each other.
Everybody has a camp now, and every camp is aimed at another. Men have the manosphere, women have feminism. Trans against cisgender, straight against gay, one race set against another. Pick any line you want and someone has already drawn it. Underneath all of it is a broken mechanism for human relationships. The wiring that is supposed to connect us has been cut.
When I read 2 Timothy 3:1-5, it doesn't feel like a far off prophecy. It feels like the news. Lovers of themselves, without natural affection, not open to any agreement, fierce. That isn't a prediction anymore. It's a description of the timeline we are standing on.
I've dealt with loneliness.
Most of you can probably relate in one way or another. And I think that is part of what this world manufactures now. It isolates people and then hands them an enemy to blame for the emptiness.
Last night I watched a horror movie called Obsession. I won't turn this into a review and I'm not trying to force a parallel out of it, but it got under my skin. If you know the Monkey's Paw trope, you know the shape of it. You get your wish and it arrives wrapped in consequences you never saw coming.
I went in expecting a crazy demon girl. That's not what it was. The girl, Nikki, is innocent. The real villain wasn't some possessed girl at all. It was the cowardice of a lonely young man who was willing to ruin an innocent person's life rather than face his own fear.
That's the part I keep chewing on. We treat cowardice like a soft failing. Weak, but harmless. Scripture doesn't. Revelation 21:8 lists the cowardly first, right alongside murderers and liars. That struck me as strange until I sat with it. When a person is too afraid to do what is right, someone else usually pays for it. Fear that goes unchecked doesn't stay fear. It curdles, and it goes looking for a victim.
I think that is what we are watching on a mass scale. A frightened, self-focused world, everyone too cowardly to love honestly, and plenty of innocent people paying for it.
But the wiring isn't damaged beyond repair. The answer to all this loneliness was never going to be another movement or another camp. 1 John 4:18 says perfect love throws fear outside. That is the one thing this system cannot manufacture, and it is the exact thing we are actually told to build.
