What exactly does it mean to be "right leaning" and "left leaning"? As a woman, I want to see if I really am "left" and if my hubby is "right"
Different Policy Priorities and Compassion/Empathy Orientation
Women tend to place higher priority on social welfare issues (support for the poor, healthcare, education, childcare, Social Security) and show greater opposition to military force or harsh punitive policies. This aligns more with liberal platforms that emphasize government support systems and compassion toward vulnerable groups. Personality research shows women score higher on average in traits like agreeableness, empathy, and tender-mindedness, which correlate with left-leaning views.
Economic and Social Role Changes
As women entered the workforce and gained independence (especially unmarried women), their economic interests shifted toward policies supporting working women, equal pay, and family-friendly safety nets — areas where liberal parties often align more closely. Declining marriage rates amplified this, since married women historically leaned more conservative.
Cultural and Identity Issues (Especially Among the Young)
The gap has grown sharply among people under 30. Young women have moved significantly leftward since around 2015–2016, driven by events like the 2016 election, #MeToo, abortion restrictions (post-Roe overturn), and perceptions of persistent sexism. They emphasize issues like sexual harassment, domestic violence, mental health, and anti-patriarchal values.
Young men have remained stable or shifted slightly rightward, often focusing more on competition, economic grievances, honor, or feeling disrespected/losing status in a changing world. Some express backlash against perceived "feminism gone too far" or traditional gender role erosion.
Other Contributing Factors Education: Women now outpace men in higher education, where liberal attitudes are more common.
Media/Social Media: Algorithms and online spaces can reinforce different narratives (e.g., progressive content for many young women, grievance/anti-establishment content for some young men).
Historical shift: The modern gap emerged partly because men moved away from Democrats more than women moved toward them.
