Paul went on to list the various assignments, writing: "first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then powerful works; then gifts of healings; helpful services; abilities to direct; different tongues."God has assigned the respective ones in the congregation.—1 Cor. 12:28.
In the first century, some brothers were appointed as ministerial servants. (1 Tim. 3:8) It seems that they were the ones who performed the “helpful services” that the apostle Paul wrote about. Ministerial servants evidently cared for necessary matters so that the elders could focus on teaching and shepherding. For example, ministerial servants may have helped to make copies of the Scriptures or may have purchased materials needed for copying. Consider some helpful services that ministerial servants perform in your congregation. (1 Pet. 4:10) They may be assigned to care for congregation accounts or territories, to order literature and make it available to the publishers, to operate audio and video equipment, to serve as attendants, or to help maintain the Kingdom Hall. All these services are necessary for the congregation to function properly.—1 Cor. 14:40. w24.10 19 ¶4-5
It is interesting that Paul did not mention overseers or ministerial servants — only teachers and those who provide "helpful services and those who have "abilities to direct." Obviously, powerful works, gifts of healings, and different tongues were phased out long ago, even as Paul foretold. Does that mean, though, that Christians will never again possess miraculous gifts? No, not at all. You might say God is saving the best for last.
Consider what is revealed in Revelation concerning the two witnesses. It says of them: "If anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouths and consumes their enemies. If anyone should want to harm them, this is how he must be killed. These have the authority to shut up the sky so that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have authority over the waters to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with every sort of plague as often as they wish."
Elijah called for Jehovah to send fire from heaven to consume his sacrifice and doom the priests of Baal. He also twice called down fire from heaven to consume the 50 men whom the wicked king Ahaziah sent to arrest the prophet. And Elijah also ordered the heavens to withhold rain for 42 months. And of course, Moses turned the Nile into blood and called down plagues upon the Egyptians.
The Watchtower has spun the fantastical tale that the two witnesses came on the scene during the First World War and were symbolically killed and disappeared. But we know that is part of the artfully contrived false story concerning the parousia. In reality, the parousia will be visible, at least to the chosen. In fact, the two witnesses are said to be standing before the Lord of the earth, Jesus Christ.
What does it mean to stand before Christ? Consider what is stated in the 3rd chapter of Malachi concerning the coming of the messenger of the covenant: "But who will endure the day of his coming, and who will be able to stand when he appears?" To this day, the Watchtower absurdly claims that the day of his coming was sometime after 1914 and that Jesus appeared invisibly. Jehovah's Witnesses are not permitted to question what they are taught. They have no option except to accept these manifold absurdities as if they were God's truth, since to question what the slave class teaches is regarded as apostasy.
But those who experience the manifestation of Christ will be changed. Will they call down fire from heaven and turn water into blood? Probably not. But since those acts are attributable to Moses and Elijah, and both men stood before powerful kings and magic-practicing priests and announced Jehovah's judgments, we may expect those who become kings of God's Kingdom while in the flesh will declare a similar denunciation. Of them, Jesus said: "But before all these things happen, people will lay their hands on you and persecute you, handing you over to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and governors for the sake of my name. It will result in your giving a witness. Therefore, resolve in your hearts not to rehearse beforehand how to make your defense, for I will give you words and wisdom that all your opposers together will not be able to resist or dispute." - Luke 21:12-15
Who will be able to stand when he appears?

An artfully contrived false story
From the very beginning, the tiny Bible study group that formed around C.T. Russell believed that Jesus had already returned. When they were sorting out the elementary biblical doctrines from all the rubbish taught by the churches, they were also captivated by the notion of an invisible...
