I feel you have a point despite Rev’s argument which also is creditable. Acknowledging truth late in the day, does not reduce the value of truth, or the realisation of it. It is a ‘revelation’. Saul had his eyes opened and shut at the same time when Christ appeared to him. The revelation was not of his intent, but to his understanding.
Realisazation is not time dependant. It is a revelation in itself, of the act of coming to understand, much like the illustration of the thief speaking to Christ . One would assume that his circumstances were born of fear, but this is far more true of the person on the other side of Jesus, wanting proof. The illustration is (in my opinion) one of insight and which in this case, could only be found by reasoning upon the two situations graphically being played out as to the very point you are making.
The same can be said of the anointing taking place after the death of Jesus, when the disciples were gathered together in the upper room. What they had been argumentative about in its meaning over the loss of Jesus, the kingdom, the work to be done and how - or even why - they were anointed. With what? Insight. In terms of understanding, faith and hope, is the basis for such much different for the disciples as it was for the thief, or for Saul? Then why not for those riven with fear and doubt and plagued by their own lack of insight and hopes for survival.
Understanding Jehovah (as much as we are able) is not the prime motivator. It is a reward for those searching for meaning. Just as the thief made mention of to the opposer. The primary motivator is a love of righteousness that belongs to Jehovah and which dwells in our heart. And just as was said at Sodom. “Find me a righteous person and I shall not destroy the city”. (Or words to that effect). So the gate was still open even just a few hours before hand for those whom would choose to go through it. I’m pretty hopeless at citing scripture - I’m more emotive than learned in that respect, but it’s the consistency of mercy that is the theme here is it not?
