It’s actually a neighborhood called Makaha not Makana. I’ve driven by this KHall. It’s about 30 min from my home. I had no idea this case was even happening. Interesting.

I found more info on the attorney’s website. The fine was against the perp and not the congregation. The org settled with the victim in a “confidential” agreement. Here is a snippet from the article and a link to the article.
”The lawsuit was filed in 2020 against Apana and the Makaha, Hawaii Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, where Apana served as an elder. While the claims against the church were resolved through a confidential settlement, the case proceeded on damages against the individual abuser, who had failed to respond.”

The victim was one of four that this perp admitted to molesting. Here is another article with the horrible details. Horrifying but I can’t find anything that says what actions the congregations took to protect the children or to expose the perp. It says he has never been criminally charged! Wow.

What happens then when someone in America is told to pay $40 million? I assume that generally speaking the American nation struggle to keep the wolf from the door like the rest of us. Does the perpetrator just laugh and shrug his shoulders and bounce a cheque at the bank or start paying it off at $10 a week? It might be nice to be awarded such a sum, but how does the ordinary criminal pay it? And I assume it accrues compound interest as well? In England we commoners got free justice (for or against!) in many cases, if we were considered poor enough, but now that has been effectively stopped and we get no justice. It’s for the rich only.
