JEHOVAH'S NAME

Interestingly, there is a whole movement under the umbrella SACRED NAME GROUPS that uses YAHWEH in their worship. Most have nothing to do with the JW's religion, but have similar basic beliefs, e.g. rejection trinity, hellfire, immortal soul, restored earth, etc.

  • Witnesses of Yahweh
  • Congregation of Yahweh's Witnesses
  • Assemblies of Yahweh
  • Assembly of Yahweh
  • House of Yahweh
  • Restored Israel of Yahweh
Not sure exactly what they refer to themselves as, "I'm a Witness of Yahweh" or "We're Yahweh's Witnesses"

Those among the SACRED NAME GROUPS, have differences among themselves as to the proper pronunciation. There was a group called Assemblies of Yah, Assemblies of Yahvah, Called out ones of Yah. There is even a group called Assembly of YHWHHOSHUA, a hybrid of Yahweh and Hoshua. One group uses the name Yahuwah. Then of course there is Stafford's group that uses the term Chjristian Witnesses of Jah.

There was an interestly group that WAS an offshoot of the Witnesses in 1942. It was started by C.H. Zook in Brooklyn, later in Leviitown, NU. They even had a branch in Vienna, Austria. They called themselves the Servants of Yah. He taught that Jehovah was the name of Satan and that God's true name is Yah. They believed in the 144,000 in heaven and the rest of mankind on paradise earth, other than that they deny Armageddon, the flood, water baptism, the ransom sacrifice, the existence of Satan as a real individual. They were universalist. Not sure how long they lasted. Probably as long as Zook led them. Usually, groups like these die off once the leader dies.
And what do you think is the correct name?

And what do you think is the correct name?
I have no idea. Honestly, I don't use the name too often, as I tend to use FATHER, when address God. I have in the past used both, Jehovah and Yahweh when I'm talking to people. BUt I tend to lean towards Yahweh as the closes to the name. I have several Sacred Name Bibles that use Yahweh. In fact, there is evidence to show that Yahweh predates Jehovah.

The official website of the Catholic Church states:
“About the 13th century the term ‘Jehovah’ appeared when Christian scholars took the consonants of ‘Yahweh’ and pronounced it with the vowels of ‘Adonai.’ This resulted in the sound ‘Yahowah,’ which has a Latinized spelling of ‘Jehovah.’ The first recorded use of this spelling was made by a Spanish Dominican monk, Raymundus Martini, in 1270” (www.catholic.com/qa/is-gods-name-yahweh-or-jehovah).

Below are some references to Yahweh:

“The true pronunciation of the name YHWH was never lost. Several early Greek writers of the Christian Church testify that the name was pronounced ‘Yahweh’” (Encyclopaedia Judaica, vol. 7, p. 680).

“Early Christian writers, such as Clement of Alexandria in the 2nd century, had used the form Yahweh, thus this pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton was never really lost. Greek transcriptions also indicated that YHWH should be pronounced Yahweh” (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 15th ed., vol. x, p. 786).

“The pronunciation Yahweh is indicated by transliteration of the name into Greek in early Christian literature, in the form iaoue (Clement of Alexandria) or iabe (Theodoret; by this time Gk. b had the pronunciation of v)…Strictly speaking, Yahweh is the only ‘name’ of God. In Genesis wherever the word sem (‘name’) is associated with the divine being that name is Yahweh” (Eerdman’s Bible Dictionary, 1979 p. 478).

“Such a conclusion, giving ‘Yahweh’ as the pronunciation of the name, is confirmed by the testimony of the Fathers and gentile writers, where the forms IAO, Yaho, Yaou, Yahouai, and Yahoue appear. Especially important is the statement of Theodoret in relation to Ex. lvi, when he says: ‘the Samaritans call it [the tetragrammaton] ‘Yabe,’ the Jews call it ‘Aia’…” (The New Schaff-Herzog Religious Encyclopedia, “Yahweh,” p. 471)

In addition to early Christian sources, evidence for Yahweh is also found in the Nag Hammadi codices, dating from the 2nd to 4th century CE. This library of Gnostic writings was discovered in Upper Egypt, near Nag Hammadi, in 1945. In all, there are over 50 texts within this library. Since they are in Greek, as with the church fathers, they preserve the pronunciation.

The Society's Insight on the Scriptures states:

“Correct pronunciation of the Divine Name. ‘Jehovah’ is the best known English pronunciation of the divine name, although ‘Yahweh’ is favored by most Hebrew scholars. The oldest Hebrew manuscripts present the name in the form of four consonants, commonly called the Tetragrammaton (from Greek te∙tra-, meaning ‘four,’ and gram’ma, ‘letter’). These four letters (written from right to left) are yhwh and may be transliterated into English as YHWH (or, JHVH)” (“Jehovah,” Insight on the Scriptures, Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, 1988. vol. 2, p. 5).
Even the organization despite using the hybrid “Jehovah,” have no choice but to acknowledge that “Yahweh” is favored by Hebrew scholars. Considering that the name of our Heavenly Father comes to us through the Hebrew language, this point is significant.

“You must pray, then, this way: “‘Our Father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified." - Jesus the son of God.
Your missing the point, it's not about how you pronounce God's name, the importance is sanctifying his name, whatever verbalization you wish to use. It's like arguing over how to pronounce Peter or Pedro and which one should be used over the other - nonsensical debate.

Sanctify: to impart or impute sacredness, inviolability, or respect to.

"Further, reject foolish and ignorant debates, knowing that they produce fights." - Timothy

I am not a scholar but I think it is Jehovah...I have already published a link in this thread (I think) where it talks about why you can be sure that it is Jehovah and not Yawe, only that it is in Spanish...I think several of the points you mention in favor of Yawe refutes them and deals with several more points.

Occasionally I apologize and ask forgiveness from Jehovah in case I say his name the wrong way. We didn’t build the wicked system that is about to be destroyed. I can well imagine that demons have a lot of free time on their hands to regret their choices. I have to suppose that Satan spent a considerable amount of time just trying to confuse people about God’s name for spite. Any attempt with good motivation seems fine to me.

One of the confusions is the ridiculous notion that the pronunciation of God's name matters. It falls into the same nonsensical Jewish debate that God's name is so holy it can't be uttered verbally, utter nonsense!

So ... I can call him Buddha? Allah? Lucifer? Joe? Anything??? Nah, I'll stick to what Jesus said, "Father". I'm His son after all.

I use Jehovah, Yahweh, Jah, Yahuah and Yehovah interchangeably I tend to favor three vowels and syllables.
My real name is Susan but when I’m talking to someone who speaks Spanish they always pronounce it Susana, which I think is beautiful. I would never correct them on the pronunciation. Jehovah’s name is already pronounced differently in many languages so I think he just appreciates our using it to honor him regardless of the exact pronunciation.

"For God is not unrighteous so as to forget your work and the love you showed for his name, in that you have ministered to the holy ones and continue ministering." Hebrews 6:10

"That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah,
You alone are the Most High over all the earth." Psalm 83:18

It's a good thing they left God's name in at least a few places in the KJV, esp. Ps. 83:18.
The Bible Students were able to use that to show God's name and that he wants people to know his name.

By the way, BillyRay, you can call me Babz, a nickname that 4JahandChrist and I came up with instead of BibleStudent just for this forum. (It's better than BS which is for butterscotch) 🙄
Will do Babz. Now that you mention it, I do see where ButterScotch might look and sound….. inappropriate. 😀

3068. Yhvh יהוה
3050. Yah יה
2148. Zkaryah זכריה
3091. Yehoshua יהושע

4 Sing to God; sing praises to his name. Sing to the One riding through the desert plains. Jah (3050) is his name! Rejoice before him!

2 Look! God is my salvation. I will trust and feel no dread; For Jah (3050) Jehoah (3068) is my strength and my might, And he has become my salvation.”

24 Therefore the true Lord, Jehoah (3068) of armies, The Powerful One of Israel, declares: “Ah! I will rid myself of my adversaries, And I will take revenge on my enemies.

14 Jehoah (3068) then said to Moses: “Look! The time has drawn near for you to die. Call Jehoshua (3091), and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, so that I may commission him.” So Moses and Jehoshua (3091) went and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.

1 In the eighth month in the second year of Da·riʹus, the word of Jehoah (3068) came to the prophet Zachariah (2148) son of Ber·e·chiʹah son of Idʹdo, saying:

45 And our forefathers received possession of it and brought it in with Jehoshua (3091) into the land possessed by the nations, whom God drove out from before our forefathers. Here it remained until the days of David.

21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jehoshua (3091),

Perhaps the uncertainty over how to vocalize the most important Name is by design because of Re 13:6.

Obviously disagree with Clint's theology but I thought I'd post this video because after the introduction he uses a good chunk of a documentary on Jehovah's name that includes interviews of Rolf Furuli
Yes I am reading his book (heavy going) which deals with common law, interesting subject.

This is such a great point from the documentary that in this exchange between Satan and Jesus, Satan never uses Jehovah’s name but Jesus‘ uses Jehovah’s name every time in his replies.

Matthew 4:1-10: “Then Jesus was led by the spirit up into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil. 2 After he had fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, he felt hungry. 3 And the Tempter approached and said to him: “If you are a son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered: “It is written: ‘Man must live, not on bread alone, but on every word that comes from Jehovah’s mouth.’” 5 Then the Devil took him along into the holy city, and he stationed him on the battlement of the temple 6 and said to him: “If you are a son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written: ‘He will give his angels a command concerning you,’ and, ‘They will carry you on their hands, so that you may not strike your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus said to him: “Again it is written: ‘You must not put Jehovah your God to the test.’” 8 Again the Devil took him along to an unusually high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him: “All these things I will give you if you fall down and do an act of worship to me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him: “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.’
