Here's my cat story.
So...we have a house we rent, and had to get the guy out that was living there and spent 6 months getting it ready to re-rent. We got fortunate, and had it rented even before we had it renovated, and we were really working every day to get it ready. We lived there back in 2004 and while we lived there I had built a large kennel in the back of the yard. No one was using it, and the guy that lived there stopped mowing that area and it was completely over grown. So one of the last things I did was clear that area.

It had dozens of small trees that had started growing, so I had to cut them all with pruning shears. In the front left corner I had left a small area that I hadn't gotten to yet. This neighborhood has a number of feral cats, and we had at least two that frequented our property. The people who were moving in have a large dog. I cleared about half of the area, and left the rest for the following day. We also were having to bring our kids out there every day as well.

The next day, I start clearing the rest of the area, and I realize I missed this corner at the front, so I start cutting that down, and I see two small maybe a week old kittens. Both my 5 year old son and ten year old daughter are there, and I look at these kittens and the first thing I think is, "What is that?" "Oh, kittens," and I think, "I doubt there's only two". Sure enough there were two more. The next thing I'm thinking is, "I can't leave them here", and I don't want my kids to see them, because then they'll want to keep them, and then I'm thinking, "but I can't deprive my kids of this experience."

So I tell my wife and my kids, and my wife decides to tell the "cat lady" across the street about it, and she has the bright idea that we should catch the feral mother, take the feral mother home so she can nurse the kittens in a cage for the next 7-8 weeks. She brought a cage over, I did manage to catch the mother, and as soon as I did, I realized that wasn't going to work, and how the heck are we gonna keep this poor mother in a cage for 8 weeks, as soon as we moved toward the cage the mother was freaking out. While my wife and I were discussing what to do, it pours down rain, the cage floods, and the mother and kitten are all laying in a puddle.

We decided we'd let the poor mother go, and bring the kittens home and bottle feed them. My daughter was ecstatic and said this "was a dream come true", tried to help nurse them, which you can guess how that turned out. Any way, they are weaned now, and if we are lucky we will just end up with one more cat, and we can adopt out the rest.

They are adorable of course, and we have an adult cat that still hisses and growls at these tiny kittens, which is hilarious... we've had them now about 4 weeks now and the "Humane Society" actually has given us assistance for fostering the kittens and they are going to get them fixed and shots etc for free, which is nice.

It's been quite the experience!

What a wonderful and heartwarming story. Rescuing life for your children to care for is an experience that will stay with them for life. A lovely start to my day! Thanks Nomex.
